SHIELD Model

INTRODUCTION

Ghana continues to face significant educational disparities, particularly in rural and underprivileged communities where access to quality education, learning materials, trained teachers, and supportive learning environments remains limited.

Eban-The Adobea Foundation was established to address these gaps through targeted, sustainable, and community-focused educational interventions. Through our flagship programme model SHIELD the Foundation delivers integrated support that addresses not only access to education but also quality, environment, and long-term learning outcomes.

SHIELD represents our holistic approach to educational empowerment and social mobility.

PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY
THE SHIELD MODEL

The SHIELD model is built on the understanding that education challenges are interconnected. A child’s success depends not only on access to school but also on teaching quality, learning materials, infrastructure, and overall learning support systems.

S — Student Scholarships
H — Holistic Literacy Development
I — Infrastructure Advocacy and Support
E — Educational Materials Support
L — Learning Support Enhancement (expanded beyond just environment)
D — Development of Teachers

PROGRAMME PILLARS

S — Student Scholarships

Objective
To remove financial barriers preventing vulnerable children from accessing education.

Programme Focus

  • Tuition fee support
  • School uniforms and basic school supplies
  • Examination fees

Rationale
Many children, especially  in deprived communities are unable to attend or remain in school due to financial hardship. Scholarship support ensures that capable and deserving students are not excluded from education due to poverty or social disadvantage.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased school enrollment and retention
  • Improved academic performance
  • Reduced dropout rates

H — Holistic Literacy Development

Objective
To develop foundational literacy, numeracy, and cognitive skills among children.

Programme Focus

  • Reading and writing skills development
  • Spelling and comprehension improvement
  • Cognitive skill strengthening
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving development
  • Character and social development learning

Rationale
Literacy is not only the ability to read and write.  It is the foundation for lifelong learning, confidence, and participation in society. Many children at the basic level struggle with foundational literacy skills, limiting their academic progression.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved reading and comprehension levels
  • Stronger cognitive development
  • Increased confidence and classroom participation

I — Infrastructure Advocacy and Support

To improve access to safe and functional educational infrastructure in underserved communities.

Programme Focus

  • Advocacy for construction of classrooms and school facilities
  • Support refurbishment of dilapidated school structures
  • Co-funding or supporting infrastructure development projects
  • Community-government partnership engagement

Rationale
A safe and adequate physical learning space is essential for effective teaching and learning. Many schools lack basic classroom structures, furniture, or safe facilities.

Expected Outcomes

  • Safer learning environments
  • Improved student attendance
  • Enhanced teacher performance and morale

E — Educational Materials Support

Objective
To provide essential teaching and learning resources to schools and students.

Programme Focus

  • Textbooks and reading materials
  • Exercise books and writing supplies
  • Computers and digital learning tools
  • Teaching aids and classroom resources

Rationale
Learning cannot occur effectively without adequate materials. Many schools and students lack basic learning tools required for quality education delivery.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved teaching effectiveness
  • Better student engagement
  • Increased access to digital learning opportunities

  • Increased community participation in education
  • Stronger learning outcomes

D — Development of Teachers

Objective
To strengthen teacher capacity, motivation, and professional growth.
